A Step-By-Step Guide To Creating The Perfect Eyebrows!

In late April, Beauty Play hosted a special K-Beauty EYEBROW One-Day Class where our beauty enthusiasts had the opportunity to learn all there is to know about how to create the perfect K-style eyebrows.

The talented guest instructor, Professor Jeongah Choi, an Associate Professor of the Makeup Major from Jeonghwa Arts University showed the class how to shape your natural brow into the perfect foundation, followed by how to use makeup to fill in your brows and create the ideal look for your face.

Today we’re going to be reviewing just a portion of what we learned about shaping the brows, and if you feel like you want to learn more, you’ll have the opportunity to sign up for her May class and other upcoming Beauty Play events at the end of the post!

How to Create The Perfect Base With Your Natural Brow

Shaping your brow can be a daunting task if you’ve never done it before or don’t have a clear guide as to what you need to do, so let’s go over what Professor Choi taught us!

Step 1: Understanding the ideal eyebrow for your face

Eyebrows are often overlooked as a repetitive step in the makeup process, but the way you do your eyebrows can change a lot about the way you are perceived. Bushy and dark eyebrows are often considered more masculine, whereas extremely thin eyebrows can be perceived as evil and witch-like - finding the perfect balance can often be a difficult task.

That’s not all though, depending on the shape of your face, eyebrows can also help to balance out your overall facial symmetry. For example, if you have a long face, harshly arched brows will only increase the lengthy appearance, whereas long, softly arched brows will extend your face sideways, creating a better overall balance.

Use this chart below to figure out the ideal brow shape for your face:

Now you know the ideal brow shape for your face, it’s also important to understand the necessary placement. There are four main factors to consider when drawing your eyebrows:

  1. Your eyebrows should sit on top of your brow bone (right above your eye socket) for the most natural look.
  2. The start of your brows should be in line with the outside of your nose (or slightly further inwards if you have a wide nose.)
  3. The tail end of your brow should be in line with the outside of your nose and the outside corner of your eye. The height will be determined by the overall brow shape.
  4. The arch of your brow should be directly above the outermost edge of your iris (the colored part of your eye) when looking straight forward.

If you’re unsure, use dots to mark each point and draw your eyebrows in with a dark eyeliner so you have an idea of what your brows will look like. Sometimes you may find that your ideal eyebrow is vastly different from your natural brows!

Step 2: Remove stray hairs with an eyebrow razor

Now that you have an understanding of the ideal shape of your eyebrows, it’s time to shape your natural brows to match as much as possible. In most cases, this will require you to shave back some of the unnecessary hairs that fall outside the boundaries of your ideal brow.

Using an eyebrow razor, use small, downward stroking motions to shave off excess hairs. It’s recommended that you go slowly and check your appearance in a mirror as you go to avoid becoming overzealous and shaving off too much. Start with one brow first, and when satisfied with the results, only then should you move on to the other side.

Step 3: Trimming back lengthy hairs with brow scissors

Even after shaving, you may notice that there are a few hairs from within the boundaries of your eyebrow that stick out beyond your desired edge. In that case, brush through your brows with a spool brush to make sure all the hairs are laying in the correct direction, and then use brow scissors to carefully trim the ends of hair hairs that stick out too far.

Bonus tip: If you have particularly thick eyebrows, after the initial trim, brush all your brow hairs upwards and repeat the process, and then do the same again but this time brush them downwards. This will thin out your eyebrows significantly without affecting the overall shape!

Step 4: Finish up by refining the brows

If any hairs along the edges of your brows are super short and will likely grow out and ruin the shape of your brows too quickly, then you may want to remove these with a tweezer. Pulling these hairs out from the roots will delay their regrown period meaning your new brow shape will stay neater for longer.

Also, if you have any hairs that stick up in odd directions, heat a wooden skewer with a lighter and use it to flatten and hold the brow hair in place. The heat from the skewer will work similarly to a flattening iron, using heat to manipulate the hair into the right position - just make sure to test the temperature on the back of your hand before using it on your face!
